Ultra Trail Drakensberg (UTD) : Martin Malherbe

Ultra Trail Drakensberg (UTD) : Martin Malherbe

What was your last race? Ultra Trail Drakensberg 100k (UTD100k) Drakensberg, Kwa-Zulu Natal, South Africa

How far was the current race? Was it a new distance? 100k, it was my 2nd attempt at 100k, but I have done 4 100 milers previously.

How long have you been running consistently? 22 years, but a lot more in the last 9 years following chemotherapy treatment for Testicular Cancer in 2009.

What made you sign up for this race? Terrain, location, recommendation? The trail is mainly based on a 62km 5 day hiking trail through the Drakensberg mountains from Sani Pass hotel to Bushman’s Nek hotel.

The 100k race does a 38k loop up one of the most spectacular passes in South Africa and turns at the Lesotho border post onto some great trails.

This is a fairly new race on the calendar and in it’s 3rd year. The photos and videos from the previous year’s events are amazing and lured me in. I also had a few friends run the 62km race the previous few years. This race is quickly becoming one of the signature races on the South African Trail running calendar.

What did you eat the most at the aid stations? Banana bread and baby potatoes.

High moment? Running into the 70km aid station having just passed the 2nd place guy. I could see he was hurting and not looking in great shape.

This was a compulsory medical check and the doctor took a quick check of vitals and sent me on my way. The confidence this gave me to push on was great and sealed the race in those few kms past the aid station.

Low moment? Having to turn on the headlamp for the 2nd time in the day and having the last 40 mins of the race back in the dark.

Do you listen to music? If yes, what's your song of the moment? No music on the run, but I am really enjoying the song American Authors – I’m Born to Run.

Would you do this race again? Definitely. The views and mountain passes are incredible. The trail community really comes out and supports this race so it is growing in stature every year.

What race is next? Comrades Marathon. My 10th Comrades. Then UTMB at the end of August.

What shoes did you wear? Altra Lone Peak 4.0

What race vest did you use? Ultimate Direction SJ ultra vest 3.0

Favorite local running store/brand/community? Tuesday Trails running crew

Dream running destination? Race or holiday. Chamonix France – luckily will get to experience it for UTMB 2019!
