Highland Fling: Beth Pascall

What was your last race? The Highland Fling

How far was the current race? Was it a new distance? The Highland Fling is 53 miles. I have raced it before back in 2016 so it’s not new to me. I’ve done plenty of races around that length but I’m actually stronger at longer distances. This year I’m running Western States 100 and UTMB, so the Fling was just a warm up!

How long have you been running consistently? I’ve been running ultra’s for 4 or 5 years and havn’t had any big gaps in my training in this period. The last couple years have been the most consistent yet.

What made you sign up for this race? Terrain, location, recommendation? It’s a fabulously well run race and there is really nothing the organizers haven’t thought of. For example you have personal drop bags at every aid station and ice-cream and prosecco at the finish! The terrain and timing of the race worked well for me in relation to the rest of my racing season.

What did you eat the most at the aid stations? I only ate my own food throughout the race. This was almost exclusively Spring Energy gels, with the exception of glass of coke at the last aid station.

Low moment? It poured with rain for most of the day and somewhere in the middle I started to get cold. I’d been hoping to run a fast time and potentially break the course record that I set back in 2016, but with the conditions as they were I realized this probably wasn’t going to happen. Once I’d accepted this a relaxed a bit and enjoyed the rest of the race.

High moment? Crossing the finish line and immediately getting in a warm shower!

Do you listen to music? If yes, what's your song of the moment? I don’t tend to listen to music during races as I like to chat to other runners and be alert to my surroundings. During training I’m a big fan of the Spotify Discover Weekly playlist, but I never listen to songs on repeat!

Would you do this race again? Sure!

What race is next? The North Downs Way 50 on 18th May followed by Western States 100 on 29th June

What shoes did you wear? Salomon S/lab Ultra 2’s

What race vest did you use? Salomon S/lab Sense Ultra 8

Favorite local running store/brand/community? ReRun Clothing is a company set up by Ultrarunner and friend Dan Lawson and his wife Charlotte. They up-cycle unwanted running gear with the aim to reduce waste in the running community. They are doing some great work right now.

Dream running destination? Race or holiday. I’d love to run in the Himalayas. Race or holiday, it wouldn’t matter.
