Leona Divide 50M: Kat Schjei
50M training run on the flowy single track of the Pacific Crest Trail? Kat Schjei is preparing for the SanDiego 100 in June. Here’s what she says about a beautiful course and its’ lovely race director. But keep your eye on the California sun!
What was your last race? Leona Divide 50
How far was it? Was it a new distance? 50 miles. Not a new distance. I opted to use this race as a nice long training run for San Diego 100 in June.
What made you sign up for this race? Terrain, location, recommendation? First, I adore the race director, Keira Henninger. I ran this race last year and recalled how insanely gorgeous the course is. Almost all single track along the PCT (Pacific Crest Trail). Stunning. The race is located near Los Angeles, but remote and away from any city life. I won a free entry into any Keira Henninger race by winning the Paramount Ranch 50k back in December so I decided to cash in and use it at Leona Divide.
What did you eat the most of at the aid stations? I've recently changed my race strategy to be more minimal and fuel almost completely from aid stations. I have found success with downing a GU every 4-5 miles and more as needed. I also love pickles! I think that I did not expect the heat we had the day of the race so I did not take enough salt. In hindsight, I should have taken a few salt pills and increased my water intake.
High moment? Sharing miles and great conversation with new and old trail friends. Also, I loved seeing familiar faces volunteering at aid stations along the way. That always perks me up!
Low moment? The heat got to me, as this course is exposed. Energy was drained! I would say around mile 40 I was ready to be done!
Do you listen to music? If yes, what's your song of the moment? I do not typically listen to music in races but lately I have been digging some Petit Biscuit.
Would you do it again? YES! I am not typically someone to duplicate races but I think I might just have to come back next year. Such beautiful scenery!
What race is next? San Diego 100 in June
