Great Southern Endurance Run 100K: Meridith Ussery
A mama of two and only 7 months post-baby #2 Meredith Ussery finds a way to make it work and runs 100k thru Atlanta, Georgia from Kennesaw Mountain to Stone Mountain. Amazing Meredith!
What was your last race? Great Southern Endurance Run 100k
How far was the current race? Was it a new distance? GSER is a 100k that runs the scenic route through the streets of Atlanta, Georgia from Kennesaw Mountain to Stone Mountain. I have run a 100 miler and a 100k before, but this is my first “long run” since having our second baby.
How long have you been running consistently? 2013 for marathons.
What made you sign up for this race? Terrain, location, recommendation? I have a three year old and a 7 month old. This race was in my back yard, so I chose it for the convenience to my family, and for the adventure of running all through Atlanta. I love the trails, but most of my training is on road or treadmill, so this was a good fit.
What did you eat the most of at the aid stations? Watermelon. :) I eat Honeystinger gels and chews for my main fuel during endurance events.
High moment? Between miles 30ish and 34. I was on my way to see my husband and kids for the first (and only) time during the race. My legs were turning over at a really comfortable, fast pace, and I was so excited to see my family. I was also VERY ready to pump (I’m exclusively breastfeeding our 7 month old).
Low moment? Miles 50ish to 59. I just started to slow down and those final miles seemed to click by so slowly. Thankfully I had a great friend and pacer to encourage me and keep me company in the hot sunshine.
Do you listen to music? If yes, what's your song of the moment? I only listened to music for a few miles, but it was nice to zone out and feel my cadence increase. I always listen to MotionTraxx with 180+ bpm.
Would you do this race again? Yes! The course isn’t marked, so I think running it again would be a little easier now that I am familiar with the route.
What race is next? Hoping to run Mid Summer Night’s Dream in June. I will either try for 24 hours and 100 miles, or use it as a training run for a summer 100.
What shoes did you wear? Saucony Kinvara road shoes
What race vest did you use? Ultimate Direction Jenny. I switched at mile 34 to my Nathan hydration belt, but in hindsight, I needed more water than the belt could provide for the aid that was available.
Favorite local running store/brand/community? Yeti trail runners.
Dream running destination? Race or holiday. Hawaii with my husband for vacation.
Thanks so much Meredith! Please come back and share with us about running a 100M less than a year after a baby! Follow her story on instagram @runningwithcadence.
